Jenny Hatley博士,课程负责人 教育研究, 谈论代表性, inclusion 而且 creating safety for the ”+社区 in an educational environment.
I hear many of the authentic 而且 honest stories of student's educational experiences.
What are the effects of race, social class 而且 family background on learning? These 而且 other questions help us see ourselves 而且 our experiences in a new light. They help us underst而且 who we have been, who we are now, 而且 who we want to become.
Recently, we have been discussing student’s experiences of being ”+ at school. They speak of schools who made equal room for ”+ voices alongside straight ones 而且 where their relationships were valued equally. But others have not been positive 而且 in this case their stories show that education needs to listen to their three cries for change:
You might say that your school ‘didn’t talk about it but they didn’t say it was bad either’; yet silence sends its own message 而且 if you are ”+, 你会清楚地接收到这个信息.
有些老师,即使经过了这么长时间的竞选, 仍然 didn’t challenge homophobic abuse including the negative use of the word ‘gay’. 跨性别学生 仍然 having to negotiate their use of basic freedoms such as which toilets to use 而且 where to change for PE. 最重要的是, 在某些情况下, 跨性别学生 required to advocate to school leaders for their needs to be met whilst educating their peers.
Yet we 仍然 expect students to learn without realising that to learn, you need to feel safe.
如果你意识到自己是”+,你会怎么做, 或者是在同性关系中, but the only relationships 而且 sex education you receive centres straight relationships 而且 treats these as the norm?
What do you do if you are part of a family with same-sex parents or carers, Doesn’t your love for the adults who care for you 而且 the ways you do ‘family’ deserve equal recognition?
But how can we get away from the issues above 而且 arrive at a place of inclusion? How can education move from social injustice, towards social justice?
This means that we must centre the voices of those affected 而且 their experiences, rights 而且 stories 而且 then act to ensure their equal participation.
We listen through the stories of our students 而且 the active debates 而且 discussions we have in lectures. We listen by spending time watching, discussing 而且 learning from stories such as that of 汉娜布拉德福德, a trans girl who navigates her first day of secondary school in the CBBC series First Day, notable because the actress playing Hannah, Evie Macdonald, is herself trans. We listen through the research 而且 expertise of our guest speakers, including Dr. 蕾切尔Bullingham 而且 马克斯•戴维斯. And we listen to ourselves 而且 the ongoing internal reflection 而且 questioning that forms our every-day practice.
Around campus you may see us wearing our rainbow lanyards 而且 displaying our rainbow postcards as signs that we are ”+ Allies. We want to provide a safe 而且 welcoming space for ”+ staff 而且 students 而且 those who just want to chat. Over 200 members of staff have signed up as Allies 而且 that number is growing. With an increase in learning from home you may also see our digital badges,
I am reminded of the quote from civil rights activist the late Maya Angelou:
And I am part of a team of lecturers who do just that – we listen, we reflect, 而且 we act.
A lot of people tell me that life for ”+ youth is better now than in the past 而且 I applaud the ways in which it is.
This is a focus in all her areas of interest which have evolved from her development of educational provision across settings in both the UK 而且 overseas. Jenny has recently been awarded the 冰球突破官网's Leading Teaching Award for her work to develop online learning 而且 promote ”+ Equality across the University.
